A FRESH START FOR RUBY

About two years ago, we regularly saw Ruby, a woman living on the streets. At first, she was more reserved, but over time, she began to open up. Through different conversations and small acts of kindness—like providing her with a tent and blankets—we built a relationship. Ruby often expressed her desire to leave the streets but felt frustrated that she hadn’t been able to yet. We encouraged her to get on the housing list and to keep pushing forward, despite the challenges.

For nearly a year, we hadn’t seen Ruby. Then, this month, while passing through the area, we suddenly saw a familiar face—it was Ruby! She greeted us warmly, looking especially put together. We told her how great she looked and how happy we were to see her again. She excitedly shared that she is now off the streets and living with relatives. She doesn’t have a phone yet, but she’s making progress in rebuilding her life.

Before parting ways, she smiled and said, “Thank you so much for being around here and encouraging people. It really makes a difference.” Her journey is a reminder that even small gestures of kindness and encouragement can play a role in helping someone find stability and hope.
